What is ‘open season’ for medical aid?

What is open season?
This is the period in which medical aid members may change their specific option on their medical aid each year, says Fedhealth Principal Officer, Jeremy Yatt. It’s your chance to take stock of whether your health needs have changed, or will change in the coming year, and to choose a plan that best meets these needs and your budget.
What is my deadline for changes?
It’s typically in November and December each year, although dates do vary across schemes. Check with your scheme to be 100% sure.
For Fedhealth members, the deadline depends on whether you’re a private member or belong to the scheme through your employer. Private members have until 30 November each year to confirm or change their option, while employee members can change options in January for the next benefit year.
How do I make the most of open season?
- Know your individual and family needs, and consider changes in the coming year that could affect these. Read more about this here.
- Understand your benefits, for example, in-hospital and screening benefits, says Yatt.
- Research and speak to a broker about the different options available.
Ask yourself…
- Does my plan still cover my unique healthcare needs, or do I need to reduce/increase my
cover? Has my family grown, or has there been a new diagnosis in my family? - Has my financial situation changed? Can I afford more comprehensive cover?
- How much day-to-day cover do I need for things like GP visits? If you’re unsure about what day-to-day
benefits include, read this. - Am I planning a pregnancy? And is my current plan’s maternity benefit enough?
How do I change my plan?
- Find out your scheme’s open season deadline and ensure you apply for any changes on or before the deadline.
- If you have a medical aid broker, they can process the option change for you. If you’re an independent private member, contact your scheme’s customer care centre, or use your online member portal to request a plan change.
- If you belong to your employer’s medical aid scheme, a dedicated account executive can help process
your changes.
