If you have been around the holiday-makers block once or twice, you’ll know that not every traveller is the same. There’s the sleep-under-the-stars roughing-it type, the luxury-at-its-finest, or the fully-packed-car big families. Fortunately, we’re spoiled for choice when it comes to holiday destinations in South Africa, some just a stone’s throw from the city. The camper

Do you love to fall asleep under the stars while listening to the breathtaking sounds of nature around you? You’re most likely a camper — someone who enjoys the simple things, with a little bit of adventure from time to time. You love the great outdoors and never say no to an opportunity to explore.

Our Recommendation:

The picturesque Magaliesberg Nature Reserve is the perfect escape to find your inner explorer. With a range of rustic campsites to choose from, breathtaking hiking trails, and various activities for the adventurer, you get to experience a budget-friendly outdoor haven.

The pampered princess

There is no shame in seeking a bit of opulence when travelling (you are on vacation, after all!). The pampered princess is all about luxury, whether it be a relaxing spa getaway, fine dining, or five-star service, you love the finer things in life.

Our Recommendation:

Whisk away to the idyllic Franschhoek in the Western Cape, where you can enjoy gorgeous vineyard views, lavish accommodation options, and indulgent delights. You may need to adjust your budget, but it’s a small price to pay for a royal escape.

The relaxer

If you dream of tranquillity, scenic landscapes, and a laid-back vibe, you’re the relaxing type. You relish in the quiet and prioritise rest on holidays — something we could all do with every now and then.

Our Recommendation:

Clarens is a small Free State town that offers a serene getaway for those seeking some quiet and comfort. Leave the hustle and bustle behind for leisurely strolls, art galleries, quaint cafes and calm. Feel at home in cosy cottages or guesthouses scattered around this ambient town.

The on-the-go holiday-maker

On the opposite end of the spectrum to relaxing, we have the on-the-go traveller. You love a good adventure and crave new and exciting experiences.

Our Recommendation:

Head to the coastal city of Durban, a bustling and vibrant landscape filled with opportunities. Enjoy a beachfront stay and fill your days with street markets, uShaka Marine World, surfing, and cultural excursions.

The big family

Finding family-friendly getaways is no easy feat. You want to create memories for a lifetime while ensuring your loved ones are safe and catered for. Luckily, South Africa, and especially the Western Cape, is roadtrip-friendly and great for those vacationing with little ones.

Our Recommendation:

The Garden Route is a must for road trippers and those with families, big or small. Visit Knysna to say hello to the elephants, stop at the many padstals for a pie and a treat, or enjoy boat rides and many other family-friendly activities. Accommodation is also plentiful, with many self-catering spots along the way.
