How much it costs to date in 2024

We know dating is equal parts exciting and nerve-wracking, but something we don’t talk about often is how expensive it can be. We spoke to four South African singles to find out how they navigate the cost of dating in 2024.

- How people in the dating scene are navigating the challenges of affordability
- Suggestions for dates that are budget-friendly or free
According to a Statistics South Africa (Stats SA) Marriages and Divorces report, both men and women are tying the knot later in life, at ages 37 and 33 respectively. This means that we are spending more time wading through the dating pool while searching for ‘The One’. While we know that dating can be fun and exciting, it can also be quite expensive.
Millennials and Gen-Z – the generations that are doing the most dating – are very familiar with this. With modern dating connecting people more and more through apps rather than face-to-face, you also increase your chances of ending up on terrible dates that come with a hefty price tag. As if the cost of living isn’t high enough!
“It’s not easy to date without spending money. Dinner and drinks at a decent establishment can cost several hundred, which is especially disappointing if the date goes badly or there is no spark,” says Yusri, 27. This sentiment is shared by Anna, 35. “I have a daughter and dates come with childcare bills, so I don’t have money in my budget for negative experiences. Unfortunately, sometimes you don’t know until it’s too late.”
It’s not any easier – or cheaper – in your early 20s, either. Buhle, 23, says that fortunately, most people are happy to split bills so that the cost doesn’t fall on one person. “I’d never want anyone to pay for me – it could lead to expectations!”, she explains. Matt, 32, has experienced the opposite on a few occasions where he was expected to cover everything. “I always offer to pay the bill, but a meal and drinks or an activity for two people can cost upward of R1 000. If there is zero chemistry, that bill can sting!”
Our singles all agreed that they had to forego other social activities to save before or after their dates. After all, if a date goes well, it gives you as much (if not more) of a mood boost as time spent with loved ones.
Dating on a budget
Going on dates doesn’t have to break the bank. You have to get creative about what you do and where you go. Here are some budget-friendly ideas to enjoy with someone special.
#1: Pack a picnic
Instead of expensive steaks or sushi at a restaurant, pack some snacks and a blanket and go and enjoy it in a scenic place, such as on the beach or in a local park – nothing like a good view and people watching to kickstart conversation.
#2: Visit a museum, concert, or an art gallery
We are lucky to have so many interesting cultural activities around South Africa and you can enter most of them for a small fee or sometimes even for free.
#3 Do an outdoor activity
For most of the year, we are lucky to have great weather as well as an impressive natural kingdom to explore. Why not take your date on a hike or go for a stroll in nature? This gives you time to chat.
#4: Host a movie marathon
Hosting a movie night in can help to save money if you have been on a few dates and know the person well (always put your safety first!). All you need is some popcorn, drinks, a warm blanket, and a streaming platform. For discount big-screen viewing, Sanlam Reality members get up to 65% off tickets at Nu Metro and only pay R40 for refreshment combos.
#5: Play some games
No, we don’t mean mind games! We mean board games, mini-golfing, or a classic karaoke duet. You can either compete with your partner or you can invite some friends over and be on the same team.
For dinners, movies, and transport at discounted prices, Sanlam Reality can make your dating experience a less expensive one! Click here to find out who we’ve partnered with to bring you the best benefits.
