Going on holiday? Use this holiday checklist before you go

Before you hit the road or take to the skies this summer, make sure you’ve checked off these easy to-dos for a stress-free break.

Holiday checklist #1: Before you drive off in your rental car…

Read the contract thoroughly to ensure you know your responsibilities and that of the rental company to make the most of the service. Don’t forget key elements by being sure to include on your holiday checklist things like:

  • The time frame you have to report an accident to the police and rental company, and the correct emergency contact number. Check with your car rental provider before you drive away.
  • Any rules that apply to crossing borders in the rental car, in case you’re planning to use your car outside of South Africa.
  • Who the named drivers are – ensure you’ve declared this upfront to your car rental provider to ensure you’re covered.
  • How the car rental company handles the settlement of e-tolls and traffic fines.
  • The type of insurance that applies to your rental.

Holiday checklist #2: If you’re driving your own car…

Get your car checked a week before your trip. A recent study by tyre manufacturer Michelin revealed that as many as 75% of drivers don’t keep their car’s tyres at the correct pressure.

Another finding of the study: one in five people don’t know the correct tyre pressure for their vehicle. According to the experts at Tiger Wheel & Tyre, you should check each tyre’s pressure at least once a month, and especially just before a long trip. This is one of the easiest ways to extend the life of your tyres and improve fuel economy and overall vehicle safety.

Remember that your tyres will lose air quicker during warmer weather, so to get an accurate pressure reading, check them before you’ve driven too far. Not sure what pressure you should be aiming for? You can find this figure in your car owner’s manual, or on a sticker in the door jam or fuel filler flap.

If your tyres do need a boost, consider inflating them with nitrogen – they will stay inflated for up to 20% longer than if they were filled with standard air.

Holiday checklist #3: If you’re flying…

Skip the queues and crowds by checking in online as early as possible. That way, you can secure seats with the most legroom. You’ll also only need to join the bag check-in queue when you get to the airport, which is often shorter and quicker, giving you more time to relax in the slow lounge.

If you’re really savvy about it, avoid booking your flight for Thursday or Friday afternoons – these are generally the busiest times at Bidvest Premier Lounges.

Holiday checklist #4: Wherever you’re going… be covered

Don’t forget to pack insurance. Plenty of medical aid plans have linked travel insurance, which tends to cover immediate emergency medical care and a return trip home if you need further treatment and are given the all-clear to travel. However, injuries sustained from extreme sports, for example, are not necessarily covered unless you declare your more adventurous plans with your insurance broker before you leave.

Remember, the travel insurance benefit linked to your medical aid would have a maximum pay-out per beneficiary, so confirm this amount before you look into extending your cover.

Are you planning to pay for your flights with your credit card? This will often include built-in travel insurance. Find out if this applies to you.

Holiday checklist #5: Wherever you’re going… have access to money without high fees

Ditch the ATM fees and the added safety risk of carrying cash by making your credit card your primary payment method. Prepare in advance for emergencies by contacting your bank to let them know about your travel plans, and to ensure your cards aren’t about to expire.
