Dial up the fun and lower the stress in preparation for your next international trip by using these travel-planning tips.

In this article you’ll learn:

  • Tips for planning a trip that keep your costs low and options plenty.
  • The checklist items to tick off before heading to the airport.

The travel plan

The most memorable holidays are the ones we don’t stress about planning. Give yourself three to six months to book your flights, accommodation and transport, and to save up your spending money, of course.

Where to go?

Check the exchange rate for the destination you have in mind. You don’t want to penny-pinch because you didn’t know a burger comes at twice the price you’ll pay at home.

Planning ahead means you can save up to a larger budget goal, and not be disappointed by all the experiences you couldn’t have.

Where to stay?

Research using platforms that offer real customer reviews and free cancellations so you can adjust your holiday without losing any money.

Crafting the right itinerary

Go the leisurely route by planning three to four nights at each accommodation so you get a decent taste of each area.

If you plan to visit multiple places during a certain period, research the transport options that connect these regions (rates, dates and durations).

The new way to pack for international travel

Packing light is key to getting around more easily. Opt for a carry-on suitcase, which you can check in at the airport if you prefer and take a backpack on board containing your valuables.

You’re allowed to take up to 1 litre of liquids, aerosols and gels (LAGs) in a sealed plastic bag, with each item’s maximum capacity 100ml. This is why travel-sized toiletries are important when packing your cabin luggage.

Roll ’em up

Roughly plan your outfits ahead of time so you end up with a capsule wardrobe. Roll your clothes up to prevent creasing and to make the most of your limited packing space.

Play packing Tetris

Your essentials take priority, so line them up before you haul out the smart footwear you’ll probably wear once and begin rolling and stuffing to fill up gaps in your suitcase. Wedge smaller durable items inside sneakers (of which you don’t need more than two pairs) and socks inside bras and hats or caps.

1 Month to go: work your way through this checklist

  • Essential travel documents
Check your passport has at least six months left before it expires. If it doesn’t, apply for a renewal at least a month in advance. And don’t forget your visas if you need them!
  • Avoid medical scares
If you know your current refill for essential medication will finish during your trip, be sure to get your prescription refilled ahead of departure.
  • Stay powered
Other countries like the US and UK use different plugs to South Africa. Remember to buy an adaptor for your devices before you leave, otherwise you could pay a premium on arrival.
